Astarte is Christina's PC, primarily dual booting between Windows 2000
and 98, but also wearing an installation of Debian GNU/Linux. Right
now, Astarte has an 1.2 GHz AMD Duron with 384 Mb of RAM and 23.5 Gb of HDD
space. This machine is one of the LAN's two printer servers, printing
on a Canon 4300 bubblejet printer (which also doubles as a scanner)
and plays host to a cute little Philips webcam that we use for
teleconferencing. Astarte also has a brand new 20x CD-RW drive and a
retrofitted Sun/Sony GDM-17E20 17-inch Trinitron monitor. Lovely.
Astarte is a remarkable goddess. Her origins are probably Sumerian, though she was worshiped from the Middle East to the edges of the (later) Roman Empire. She's known as Inanna, Ashtaroth, Belial, Belili, and (to name but a few) Ishtar, from which was derived the Greek version Astarte. In most aspects, Astarte is a moon goddess though she was also connected to the planet Venus, also known as the evening and morning star, Lucifer, et cetera. She's a fertility goddess, though (as Inanna) she was also a goddess of war, just like Athena. It's believed that Aphrodite was based on an early version of Astarte.
