Garmin Tools is a small but growing collection of tools I developed to
use my Garmin GPS under Linux. There are three driving requirements:
- To backup my GPS;
- To transfer Geocaching
waypoints to the GPS receiver; and
- To generate statistics and plot maps of rides, walks and hikes.
In its current (alpha) state, Garmin Tools contains two programs:
- The transport agent garmintool is responsible for
transferring information from/to the GPS.
- The pre-/post-processor gpsproc does data massaging at different levels.
For an example of what you can do with the package, please have a look
at the
Dean Village
album in the
BedroomLAN Gallery. Picture captions are automatically annotated with
coordinates from the GPSR, and a
map of the track
can be generated automagically.
This package is still being developed, but it's now reached a state of
‘maturity’ that allows me to release an early version.
Warning: this is not production-quality. Do not
trust this package with your GPSR backups yet.
Garmin Tools is available as source,
Debian and RPM packages. It's provided under the terms of the GNU General Public License, version 2.
