This page is a shameless show-off (and it's still in the making). The only reason I'm making it is because, even in Anno Domini MMI (and MMII, and MMIII, and probably for a long time to come), people have misconceptions about *nix workstations. To answer, no, I don't use a serial terminal for everyday work. No, I don't use a text console for everyday work (I don't even have a text console due to my unusual monitor ― it's a graphics mode with VGA text mode emulation on top of it). Here are visual answers to these questions, and more. This is all software I use on a daily basis. All of it, unless otherwise stated, is Freeware, Open Source and generally non-commercial.
Unless otherwise stated, the common base for all screenshots is Vennëa, an AMD Duron box with the Linux operating system installed as part of the Debian GNU/Linux distribution. The eye candy is served by a 3DFX Voodoo 3 (and now an ATI Radeon 7500) card pumping bits into a Sun/Sony GDM-20D10 20-inch workstation monitor (do you want to make it work on a PC?). What you're seeing is the XFree86 X server and the K Desktop Environment.
So, on to the silly questions/assumptions.
